Group of 24 Men’s Basketball Alums Celebrate 60 Years of Golf and Memories

September 7th, 2017

About 60 years ago Tom Young (Basketball -57) started a golf group called the Liars. In August of this year the group had its 60th anniversary. The group originally started with eight golfers and in a couple of years had grown to 24. Due to various reasons the group is now down to 16. We gather for four days of golf , card playing, and memories.

This year’s group included Tom Young, Bob Kessler (Basketball -56), Bo Nardone (Basketball-56), Gene Danko (Basketball-59), John Nacincik (Basketball-57), Jerry Bechtle (Basketball-60), and Joe Horning(Football-54). Due to a family illness, Pete Krukar (Basketball-60) who has attended over 55 years, could not make it. Over the 60 years other Terps such as Frank Fellows (Basketball), Bob Everett (Basketball-55), Ron Brooks (Basketball-54), Jim Halleck (Basketball-59), Rod Breedlove (Football), and Gary Williams (Basketball-67) have attended. There has been around 5,900 rounds of golf played by the group, but only one hole-in-one. Gary Williams has that honor.

The Liars have played at Hillcrest Country Club (PA), Conneaut Lake (PA), Galen Hall (PA), Nemacolin Woodlands (PA), Hershey Park (PA), Wisp(PA), Toftrees (PA), Cheat Lake (W. VA), and Penn National (PA).

A lot of memories, laughs, card playing, beers, and a lot of lies. One big memory discussed this year was the 1957 winning of the ACC Basketball Tournament by the 1957/58 basketball team. That team was made up of Tom Young, Jim Halleck, John Nacincik, Gene Danko, Pete Krukar, and Jerry Bechtle, all of which are great golfers ( another lie).

We can’t wait till next year. Jerry Bechtle
